Moby sells midcentury Westchester gem for charity for $1.1M
Recording artist, real estate buff, animal rights activist and philanthropist Moby has sold his two-bedroom midcentury house in Westchester County for $1.1 million in a trade for which he has the best of intentions, according to Mansion Global. 6sqft reported in July that Moby, whose real name is Richard Melville Hall, was putting the 3,100-square-foot modern home in Pound Ridge on the market for $1.3 million just four months after buying it for $1.24M. At the time he explained the sale on Instagram by saying, “It’s one of the most beautiful houses I’ve seen, but to be honest, I’m rarely there. So I’m going to sell it and take the money to: support progressive political candidates, support my animal rights foundation, produce documentaries, and fund scholarships.”
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright-disciple David Henken in 1956, the Westchester home has jaw-dropping mahogany interiors, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the woods and a quaint garden, and a swimming pool.
David Henken practiced Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian principles, designing affordable homes integrated into their landscape.
The great room boasts an unusual corner fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and access to the terrace.
The living room because is anchored by two giant walls of glass that overlooks tall trees. This room also has a fireplace built with stones from a nearby river and a native rock outcropping.
The kitchen is sleek and modern with a cozy breakfast nook.
The master suite has more incredible views and another dramatic ceiling, as well as a sun deck.
The second bedroom also has an en-suite bath, and there’s an additional “hotel” guest room crafted in full mahogany with a clever Murphy bed.
Outside on the nearly two-acre property, there’s a detached two-car garage and a lovely pool.
Moby is well known for his public philanthropy. His vegan restaurant in LA, Little Pine, donates all of its proceeds to animal rights causes, and his recent anti-Trump studio album “Everything was Beautiful, and Nothing Hurt,”, was released for free. His said his latest endeavor seemed “like a better use of money than a beautiful house I use a few days out of the year.”
